Auger-Aliassime Stuns Federer

Felix Auger-Aliassime scored the biggest win of his career, knocking out 10-time Halle champion, former No. 1 and his childhood idol Roger Federer in the second round of the Halle Open on Wednesday.

Auger-Aliassime, who shares his birthday with Federer (August 8), is 19 years younger than the 20-time Grand Slam champion and was playing his first match against the Swiss. However, the Canadian was not overawed by the occasion and looked very composed throughout the match, which saw him make a remarkable recovery after losing the first set to win the contest 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Broken just once in the match, Auger-Alissime had 15 break point chances and he converted three of them. He was exceptionally good with his serves, striking 13 aces, winning 88% first serve points and 62% points on second. The 20-year-old also won 41% return points to wrap up the contest in an hour and 45 minutes.

Yet to win an ATP title, Auger-Aliassime reached an eighth final in Stuttgart last week, falling to Marin Cilic in straight sets.

He began his Halle Open campaign with a 6-3, 7-5 win over doubles partner Hubert Hurkacz.

The win over Federer improved Auger-Aliassime to 19-12 this year. He also reached the final at Melbourne-2 but fell to Dan Evans in the title clash.

Qualifier Giron Keeps Marching

It’s been a solid week for American Marcos Giron. After failing to qualify for Stuttgart with a straight sets defeat to Gregoire Barrere in the first qualifying round, Giron came to the Halle Open with hopes of at least getting through the qualifiers. Four matches later, the World No. 75 finds himself in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Giron defeated 18-year-old Swiss Dominik Stephan Stricker and Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan in the qualifiers to enter the main draw without dropping a set.

He continued his winning run in the first round, defeating Canadian Vasek Popisil 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6) and then edged past Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round on Wednesday.

Giron saved all four of the break points he faced in the match and converted three of five to win the one-hour-and-39-minute contest 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-4. Struff had knocked out the top seed Daniil Medvedev in the first round.

The 27-year-old Giron, who reached the third round of a major for the first time at Roland Garros this year, has an 8-9 win-loss record in 2021.
