Victoria Azarenka v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

There has been one previous match played between these two players, with one other encounter ending when Azarenka withdrew before their Madrid Open second round match earlier this year. The only match in which they faced off was also earlier this year at the Australian Open where Pegula won in straight sets.

For the second match in a row, Azarenka was faced with a German veteran and for the second time in succession she did not have too many difficulties in registering a straight-set win.

Azarenka defeated Angelique Kerber in the second round 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 23 minutes, overturning a late attempt of a fightback from her distinguished opponent.

After wrapping up the first set in 35 minutes with one break of serve the difference between the two players, Azarenka looked to be in trouble in the second when she fell behind twice.

Down 1-4, she looked to have brought parity by breaking Kerber back to make it 3-4 but then lost her serve yet again to leave her opponent to serve for the set. Instead Azarenka registered back to back breaks and then needed four match-points to convert and seal off a victory.

Pegula Demolishes Pliskova. Again.

This has been a rather one-sided rivalry so far and Pegula showed why it was surprising from the bookies to have her second favourite in her second round encounter against Karolina Pliskova.

In what was the fourth time Pegula faced Pliskova, the American registered 7-5, 6-2 win in a mere hour and 17 minutes. It was her fourth win in as many matches against Pliskova and the first time she has made it back to back victories on grass.

There were a total of nine breaks of serve in a highly erratic serving encounter, with Pegula herself dropping it three times. In fact, in the first set there were four breaks of serves to take them to 4-4 before Pegula saved a break-point at 5-5 and then broke Pliskova at 6-5 to wrap up the set.

The second set proved to be an easier nut to crack though as the American sealed off her quarterfinal berth.

Pegula’s overall record on grass isn’t the greatest but she has shown enough signs this year to suggest she cannot be taken lightly.

Azarenka v Pegula Prediction and Tip

While it is understandable Azarenka starts a favourite here at 3/5, Pegula’s form cannot be ignored and expect her to push her opponent hard.
