Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Mikael Ymer Preview

There have been two previous matches between the 35th-ranked Davidovich Fokina and Ymer, who is ranked 98th in the world and surprise, surprise, Ymer has won both times. The second of those had come at the Doha qualifiers last season.

That is not to say Davidovich Fokina will start off as a second favourite because 2021 has been way kinder to him.

He enters the grass swing on the back of a quarterfinal appearance at French Open against a player who has won a total of six main draw matches this season.

Interestingly, neither player has won a main draw match on grass in their respective careers so far, which means while the Spaniard’s better form and overall pedigree makes him a favourite, one might not have the best idea on where this match could be headed. Could see a three-setter.

Davidovich Fokina v Ymer Tip

Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Egor Gerasimov Preview

Tsonga and Gerasimov will be facing off in the first round in Eastbourne in what would also be their second meeting of the season – and of their careers – and in a lot of ways this could be a closer match than what is on show on the odds.

Because Tsonga, who has played seven matches this season and won just one, is a 4/9 favourite in this one. Which is thanks to his overall record on grass as compared to Gerasimov’s record who has won no match on this surface.

Add to this are Gerasimov’s recent win-loss results, which read an abysmal 0-7 and we know why Tsonga starts a favourite.

We think Gerasimov might not be a favourite but playing an opponent who has also not won too much could give him a motive to fight. Expect him to snatch a set at the very least.

Tsonga v Gerasimov Tip

Gerasimov to win a set: 4/6 (bet365)

Max Purcell v James Duckworth Preview

In what will be their first ever meeting, Aussies Duckworth and Purcell will be facing off for a place in the second round. Purcell will be gunning for his first win on grass main draw competitions, but for a player who has never risen higher than 204th in the world things could get difficult.

Duckworth had to qualify for this tournament with a couple of qualifying wins, having previously made the second round on the grass courts of Stuttgart Open.

Earlier this season, the 92nd-ranked Aussie had also made the third round in Miami and had another third round appearance in Murray River Open. He will start a heavy favourite here too.

Purcell v Duckworth Tip

Duckworth to win: 4/11 (bet365)

Yoshihito Nishioka v Andreas Seppi Preview

The 56th-ranked Nishioka has an interesting first round match against Seppi, with a 1-1 head to head record going into this one. More importantly though, Nishioka last won a match on grass in 2016 and has never won one in main draws of such competitions.

On the other hand, Seppi’s experience on grass makes him a tough competitor; he might be ranked 95th in the world but has a 60-46 win-loss record on grass.

And that is also why Seppi starts a favourite here despite the lower rank. Backing him to get past Nishioka, who is 8-12 on win-loss this year.

Nishioka v Seppi Tip

Seppi to win: 3/4 (bet365)
