Casper Ruud v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head
Ruud is 1-0 on the tour, having beaten Sandgren in straight sets in the Round of 16 in Geneva earlier this year.
They also met at a qualifying round in Auckland in 2018, and Ruud won that as well, however, that match had gone the distance.

Ruud Sends Simon Packing
Fifth seed Casper Ruud won his first tour-level match on grass as he defeated France’s Gilles Simon 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the first round of Mallorca Championships on Monday.
The World No. 14 Norwegian, whose only previous grass-court appearance ended in a first-round defeat to John Isner at Wimbledon in 2019, needed an hour and 40 minutes to dispatch the 2015 Wimbledon quarterfinalist on Monday. Ruud won 80% of his first-serve points, saved three of four break points and converted two of five.
The win improved the 22-year-old to 23-7 this year, which saw him claim his second career title, reach two Masters 1000 semifinals and beat two top 10 players.
Ruud, who claimed the Argentina Open title last year to became the first Norwegian to win a tournament on the tour, claimed his second career title this year by beating Denis Shapovalov in the Geneva Open final. He also produced his best Grand Slam result by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open and made it to the semifinals of the Monte Carlo and the Madrid Masters, falling to Andrey Rublev and Matteo Berrettini respectively.
Ruud’s two top 10 wins this year came against Stefanos Tsitsipas in Madrid and Diego Schwartzman in Monte Carlo.
Having got off to a winning start on grass, Ruud will now be looking to establish himself on the surface.

Sandgren Hoping for Change of Fortune on Grass
Ruud will face World No. 68 Tennys Sandgren of the U.S. in the next round. Sandgren defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in two hours and two minutes on Sunday.
The 29-year-old American came into the tournament with a woeful 3-8 record in 2021, which included five first-round defeats and three second-round exits. Sandgren also lost his first qualifying round in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome.
His three wins this year came against John-Patrick Smith at Melbourne-1, Pedro Martinez in Miami and Salvatore Caruso in Geneva.
A two-time Australian Open quarterfinalist, Sandgren won his only ATP title in Auckland in 2019 and finished runner-up at the U.S. Clay Court Championships in 2018.
He has a 6-5 career record on grass, thanks to his run to the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2019.
On Sunday, Sandgren served nine aces, saved three of four break points, converted two of five and won 78% first-serve points to dump out the World No. 69.
Ruud v Sandgren Prediction and Tip
Despite Ruud’s inexperience on grass, he will have an upper hand against Sandgren. The American has had a dismal run this season, while the Norwegian has tasted a lot of success. Expect Ruud to advance to the quarterfinals.
