Bautista Agut Looking to Overcome Halle Disappointment

2019 Wimbledon semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut didn’t have a great start on grass this season, as he was knocked out by America’s Sebastian Korda in the first round at Halle last week.

Seeded third in Mallorca, Butista Agut, who received a first-round bye, will look to quickly put the Halle disappointment behind and give his Wimbledon preparations some impetus with a decent showing this week. The 33-year-old comes into the tournament with a 19-14 record in 2021. He has featured in two finals and a semifinal this year, but hasn’t been able to add to his nine career titles.

The World No. 10 won his first trophy at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2014 by beating Benjamin Becker in the final. That still remains his only final on grass. He has an overall record of 31-14 on the surface.

This year, the Spaniard was in terrific form in the first quarter, reaching the finals in Montpellier and Doha, but falling to David Goffin and Nikoloz Basilashvilli respectively. He also reached the semifinals at the Miami Masters by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the last eight, but couldn’t find a way past Jannik Sinner.

Travaglia Wins First Match on Grass

Facing Bautista Agut in the second round will be Italy’s Stefano Travaglia, who ousted Argentina’s Guido Pella in the first round on Monday for his first ever win on grass in his professional career.

The win ended a five-match losing streak for the World No. 86, who had not won since beating Benoit Paire in the first round in Rome. Since that win, Travaglia lost to Denis Shapovalov in the second round in Rome and then faced first-round defeats in Geneva, Parma, Roland Garros and Queen’s.

The 29-year-old had begun the season in emphatic fashion, reaching the quarterfinals in Antalya in the season opener and then making it to his first ever ATP final at Melbourne-1. He couldn’t win a maiden title, going down to Sinner in the final and lost form completely after that. In the last 14 matches, the Italian has a woeful 2-12 record.

On grass, he had played just three matches prior to Monday’s win and had lost all three of them, two of those being first round defeats at Wimbledon in 2017 and 2018.

Bautista Agut v Travaglia Prediction and Tip

Bautista Agut’s experience on grass courts and current form make him the favourite against Travaglia. Expect the Spaniard to get his first win on the surface this season and move to the quarterfinals.
