Azarenka Saves Multiple Match Points Against Cornet

In a gutsy performance on Wednesday, Victoria Azarenka saved four match points against France’s Alize Cornet to move into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) second-round win.

The former World No. 1 needed three hours and two minutes to win the edge-of-the-seat contest, which saw both the players convert five and save six break points and win 114 points each on the match.

The Belarusian, ranked 14th in the world, had begun her campaign with 7-5, 6-0 rout of compatriot Yuliya Hatouka.

This is her second tournament on grass this year. The two-time Wimbledon semifinalist had reached the semifinal in Berlin last week by winning her first three rounds, but couldn’t reach a 41st career final, falling to Russia’s Ludmilla Samsonova.

A 21-time champion on the tour, the 31-year-old Belarusian improved to 13-4 this year. She had earlier reached the semifinal of the Qatar Open and the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Sorribes Tormo Knocks Out Doi

Facing the second seed on Thursday will be Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo, who knocked out Japan’s Misaki Doi in the second round on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Spaniard, who won her maiden career title in Guadalajara earlier this year, needed an hour and 50 minutes to defeat the Japanese player 6-4, 6-4. Sorribes Tormo saved eight of 11 break points and converted five of six to move into the quarterfinals.

She had begun her Bad Homburg challenge with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan, winning the contest in two hours and 11 minutes.

The victory improved Sorribes Tormo to 19-10 this year. In addition to her title in Guadalajara, she reached the semifinal in Monterrey and the last eight in Miami.

Azarenka v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

After the three-hour marathon on Wednesday, Azarenka will be extremely tired. She has far more experience than Sorribes Tormo and had she been fresh enough she would have been the favourite to win the contest. Sorribes Tormo has started off well and should carry that momentum into the quarters. Expect the Spaniard to upset the second seed.
