A Last Hurrah for Bertens?

Bertens is only 29 but has already announced this will be her final season of tennis before she hangs her racquet. In fact, Wimbledon could well be her last tournament other than the Olympics later in Tokyo and the Dutchwoman would hope to end her career on a high.

Coming off a brilliant couple of seasons in 2018 and 2019, Bertens struggled through 2020 and ended the last year with an Achilles Heel surgery that forced her to take a break from the sport.

Returning back to play in Doha this year, Bertens fell to three successive, straight-set losses before finally carving out her first win of the season. That came against a player ranked outside the top 700, Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva before Bertens lost three more matches in a row.

Other than that sole win, Bertens has won just one set, a possible indicator of what she meant when she said, “I have always demanded the maximum of myself, but the tank is quite empty”.

Can Wimbledon 2020 provide her with that one last moment of joy on the tennis court?

Kostyuk Showing Signs of Solidity

Primarily a clay court player, the 67-ranked Kostyuk has been showing signs of a breakout that should push her into the top 50.

It was on display at French Open where she stunned Garbine Muguruza in the first round and made it as far as the fourth. She now has a chance to take down another top-20 player like Muguruza, and more so because of her opponent’s issues in recent times.

To go with that showing at Roland-Garros Kostyuk has already made it to the semifinals of two other competitions.

It began with one at the Abu Dhabi Open where she won four matches in a row and then was repeated at the WTA Istanbul where she got past Daria Kasatkina, one of the most consistent players of the season.

A maiden main draw win at Wimbledon awaits her.

Bertens v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Such has been Bertens’ on-court problems, she has decided to retire from the game this season and that also shows in the offered odds – Kostyuk is a whopping 3/10 to win this. Backing her to do that, the only question is if Bertens can pluck a set out of her?
