Sofia Kenin v Wang Xinyu Head to Head

Kenin and Xinyu have never faced off before in a competitive encounter.

Kenin Showed Signs of Rhythm at Roland Garros

Following on from the kind of season Kenin had in 2020, this has been a disappointing year so far for the American. That is, if you discount the more recent signs on court.

Because coming into the French Open late last month, Kenin had won just seven of the 15 matches she had played and was on a four-match losing streak as well. Injuries had a part to play obviously but other than that it did look like the rhythm was missing.

At French Open, Kenin looked to be back. She did not make it as far there as she had in 2020 – was a losing finalist to Iga Swiatek – but the American did overcome Jelena Ostapenko and Jessica Pegula on her way to the fourth round.

And while she fell to Maria Sakkari at that stage, Kenin will take some confidence from that showing.

What was interesting to note is Kenin did not feature in any of the grass tournaments in the lead-up to Wimbledon. That could play a part but a mitigating factor to that is her record on grass – Kenin has a title on grass which had come in Mallorca in 2019.

Can she kick-start this tournament with a strong showing though?

Xinyu Eases into Main Draw

19-year-old Xinyu has never seen better than being 135th in the world and as a result needed to come through the qualifiers to make the main draw here at Wimbledon. This will be the first time she features in a first round match here in London.

This goes with the first round appearances at the 2018 Australian Open and 2019 US Open but the Chinese player has never won a match otherwise in Grand Slam tennis.

In the qualifiers here, Xinyu was aided by an easy draw, as she faced players ranked 198th, 259th and 487th but all of a sudden the stakes and the opposition pedigree have changed.

It’s a rare chance in the main draw, but she is also facing a top-10 player and for someone who has won just two WTA main draw matches all of the year, it does look like an uphill battle.

Kenin v Xinyu Prediction and Tip

Kenin is showing signs of getting back to her best while Xinyu’s form hasn’t given too many signs of an ability to a shock a top-10 player. Backing a straight-set win for Kenin.
