Aryna Sabalenka v Monica Niculescu Head to Head

There has been one previous encounter between these two players with Sabalenka having defeated Niculescu in straight sets at the 2018 Shenzhen Open.

Sabalenka in a Recent Form Slump

Form slumps have different meanings for different players but for a world number four to have won just five of her previous nine matches is a sign of her not been at her best.

Especially because of what had preceded before that.

Sabalenka had made back to back finals on clay; first losing to Ash Barty in Stuttgart before turning the table on the world number one in Madrid by winning the title there.

So much so, Sabalenka was one of the players to watch at French Open but was sent packing in the third round by eventual finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. It turned out to be three-setter with a damp squib for the third set as Sabalenka failed to win a game.

And what’s followed on grass hasn’t been extraordinary either.

Sabalenka lost to Madison Keys in the first round in Berlin before winning a couple of matches in Eastbourne and then losing to Camila Giorgi in the third.

Can the Belarusian shrug off this slight slump as she opens her Wimbledon campaign?

Niculescu Needs Qualifier Wins

Niculescu is a former top 30 player but currently ranked 193rd in the world following a string of poor seasons under her belt, forcing her to play on the ITF circuit and qualifiers of WTA tournaments.

This year itself, Niculescu hasn’t won a single main draw match and at times struggled to even qualify for the main draws of competitions.

In fact in the first seven tournaments she featured in the season, Niculescu lost six of the qualifiers, making the main draw of one as a lucky loser and another as a direct entrant. She lost both those matches too.

It was at the French Open she finally managed to win a couple of qualifiers before going down in the third, won a round in an ITF tournament and finally made the main draw here with three qualifying wins in what has been her best performance of the season.

Unfortunately for Niculescu, she now faces one of the best players on tour this season in her Wimbledon opener.

Sabalenka v Niculescu Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka should have no major worries to get past Niculescu, winning in straight sets and giving nothing away to her Romanian opponent.
