Cori Gauff v Francesca Jones Head to Head
While these two players have never faced off in the main draw of any competition, they did play each other as recently as the qualifiers at the Adelaide International. Gauff had easily won that encounter.

Gauff has gone from strength to strength and is now a solid showing away from breaking into the top 20 on the WTA charts. Currently at her career-best ranking of 23rd, Gauff enters Wimbledon having featured in just one previous edition and she had surprised a few at that time.
Needing to qualify to make it to the main draw at Wimbledon in 2019, Gauff won three matches in a row including one against Venus Williams to storm into the fourth round. The then-15-year-old was then defeated by Simona Halep but that looked to have spawned off the legend of Gauff.
Because she has only improved in her game since then.
Take this year for instance. Gauff has already made it to three tournament semifinals and gone on to win one title – the second of her career. What makes it even more superlative is it came on clay, a surface that the American hasn’t enjoyed too much in the past.
In fact Gauff was 16-4 on clay this season and will now she can build on that and shrug off her second round loss to Anastasija Sevastova at Eastbourne.

Jones in a Form Rut
Jones had made a decent start to her season, especially on the ITF circuit where she made the final and semifinal at two of the tournaments. And by winning her three qualifying rounds at Australian Open, Jones had also made it to the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time ever.
In more recent times, however, Jones’ form has fallen by the wayside and that doesn’t augur too well going into a tournament as big as this and against a player as talented as Gauff.
The Brit fell in back to back clay court competitions, lost her opening qualifying round at French Open and then went down in successive matches on the grass courts of Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne, leaving her with a five-match losing streak.
Question here is not if she can surprise Gauff but whether she can put up a bit of a fight.
