Karolína Muchová v Shuai Zhang Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players with Muchova having won that encounter in straight sets at the 2020 Ostrava Open.

Wimbledon Quarterfinalist Muchova Makes Slow Start

Having made it to the quarterfinal at Wimbledon the last time it was played, Muchova would have expected to make a much stronger start to the grass court season than she eventually did.

Playing in her only tournament on grass in the lead-up to the year’s third Grand Slam, Muchova was drawn to take on Veronika Kudermetova in her opener at the German Open.

And as it turned out, Kudermetova, who herself has been some excellent form all season, hasn’t quite gotten going on grass. Yet, Muchova failed to overcome her Russian opponent, losing in three sets.

The bigger question, however, is Muchova’s decision to play just one tournament on grass before Wimbledon when each of the three weeks leading up to that competition have allowed players to take part in it.

Will that be a decision that comes back to bite this year’s Australian Open semifinalist?

Zhang Hoping to Put Injury Behind

After a horrid start to the season, Zhang looked to have turned a corner with a switch to grass when she overcame the odds to make it to the final at Nottingham Open.

On her way to getting to the title-decider, where she eventually lost to Johanna Konta, Zhang surprised the likes of Kristina Mladenovic and Zarina Diyas.

And while that run should have provided a big push to Zhang, her problem came in the second round in the Birmingham Open that followed. She won her opener there but then struggled to get going against Heather Watson, retiring from the encounter because of a leg injury.

It looked like Zhang hadn’t fully recovered from that problem as she fell in the Eastbourne qualifiers, losing to Marta Kostyuk in the second qualifying round.

For confidence, Zhang doesn’t have to look too far back either, having registered  her best ever performance at Grand Slams when she did that at Wimbledon in 2019. A quarterfinalist there, Zhang could give Muchova a fight.

Muchová v Zhang Prediction and Tip

No surprises that Muchova starts a heavy favourite at 1/4 but we believe Zhang might not be a pushover here. Expect Zhang to win a set here.
