Mannarino Ends Lopez’s Challenge

After struggling the entire season, France’s Adrian Mannarino finally seems to have something going his way in Mallorca. The World No. 42 held off a comeback bid from veteran Spaniard  Feliciano Lopez on Thursday to seal a semifinal spot for the first time this season.

The Frenchman, 32, needed an hour and 38 minutes to defeat the 39-year-old Spaniard 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the battle of lefties, Lopez out-aced Mananrino, striking 15 aces against the Frenchman’s five, but it was Mannarino who broke his opponent twice and got broken just once in the match.

Coming into the tournament with a woeful 6-16 record in 2021, Mannarino defeated Germany’s Jan Lennard-Struff 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the first round on Sunday and then got a lucky pass in the Round of 16 after Dominic Thiem retired with a wrist injury while leading 5-2 in the first set.

The Frenchman’s best performances this season included a run to the third round at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal finish in Singapore.

This is Mannarino’s third tournament on grass this year. He lost to Australia’s James Duckworth in the first round in Stuttgart, but won his first round match at Queen’s, beating Britain’s Liam Broady before going down to Dan Evans in the Round of 16.

A solid grass court player, Mannarino won his only career title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2019. In addition, he also has two runner-up finishes in Antalya in 2017 and 2018.

Mannarino has reached the fourth round of Wimbledon thrice, in 2013, 2017 and 2018.

Querrey Knocks Out the Third Seed

Mannarino will meet 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist Sam Querrey in the semifinals on Friday after the 6’6″ American knocked out the third seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Querrey blasted 25 aces in the match for a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win in an hour and 32 minutes. The American won 84% first-serve points, saved all three break points and broke the World No. 10 once from eight breaking opportunities to cruise to the final four stage.

A 10-time winner on the Tour, Querrey came into the tournament with a 5-8 record this year, which included a run to the semifinals in Stuttgart on his grass opener. However, he failed to reach the final after falling to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

In his opening round in Mallorca, Querrey fought back from a set down to beat Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). He was slated to play Ugo Humbert in the Round of 16 but the Halle champion pulled out of the tournament allowing Querrey to move into the last eight.

The 33-year-old American has played four finals on grass, winning the title at Queen’s in 2010 and finishing runners-up in Newport in 2009, Nottingham in 2015 and Eastbourne in 2019.
