Kudermetova Makes a Struggling Start on Grass

Kudermetova’s results in the two grass court competitions she has played this season have come as a surprise.

Ranked 32nd in the world, the Russian had come into the grass swing with a 25-12 win-loss record for the season, built around a title victory in Charleston on clay and a final appearance at Abu Dhabi on their hard court surface.

It was her second round defeat at French Open that was equally shocking but to then lose to Ludmilla Samsonova, a fellow countrywoman who would go on to win the title in Berlin, wouldn’t have gone down too well.

Unfortunately for Kudermetova that wasn’t where the issues ended for her. She was sent packing in the first round at Eastbourne by Alison Riske, who was 2/1 to win that match and still crushed Kudermetova in straight sets.

It’s not like Kudermetova’s results on grass have otherwise been under-par, having made the quarterfinal and semifinal in the 2018 and 2019 edition respectively of the Hertogenbosch Open. Can she improve on her showing for this season though?

Golubic Coming off Eastbourne Quarterfinal

It’s been quite an up and down sort of a grass court career for Golubic who has, at times, found it difficult to get going and at other times reached the deeper rounds of competitions.

Like, for instance, Golubic had made it to the third round at Wimbledon the last time it was played. And then again, this season, she won just one of her first three matches on grass.

More recently, Golubic came through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw at Eastbourne, and then defeated Samantha Stosur and Belinda Bencic in her first two rounds as well. And she could have even gone further through but went down fighting to Anett Kontaveit in three sets.

Golubic had earlier this season made the final of the Lyon Open, again as a qualifier, and doubled that tally with a similar showing in Monterrey.

Given how her season has gone, Golubic will give herself a good shot at getting past her opponent here.

Kudermetova v Golubic Prediction and Tip

While Kudermetova is a favourite on paper, this has all the makings of an upset. Backing a three-setter here that ends in the favour of Golubic.
