John Isner v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

There has only been one previous meeting between these two players with Isner having defeated Nishioka at the 2017 Memphis Open in a fighting three-setter.

Isner Coming off No Grass Practice

This isn’t quite the first time that Isner hasn’t played a match on grass in the lead-up to Wimbledon. In fact the last time Wimbledon was held, Isner had directly landed in London, won a round against Casper Ruud before falling to Mikhail Kukushkin in the second.

Isner had then followed that up with an appearance at Newport Open where he defeated Alexander Bublik in the final to lift the trophy. It was Isner’s last ATP title.

This year, Isner hasn’t played on grass either and in general has featured in lesser tennis than usual. On hard courts, Isner played three tournaments with a fourth round appearance at Miami his best showing.

And on clay, he took part in two competitions with a quarterfinal in Madrid and third round at French Open to show for his effort.

Can he start things off on grass with a positive showing?

Nishioka 8-13 This Season

It has been a forgettable season for Nishioka so far, winning just eight of his 21 main draw matches. And in fact, Nishioka might not have even made it to two of the tournament main draws, but for being a lucky loser at them.

Unfortunately for the Japanese player, there has been very little consistency on court. Back to back wins have been rare, with Nishioka managing that in three tournaments but at six other tournaments he has lost in first round.

This followed a poor start at the ATP Cup earlier this season when he lost both his singles match and Nishioka now enters Wimbledon on the back of a defeat in the only match he played on grass at Eastbourne.

In fact Nishioka’s last win on grass at any level came in 2016 and overall, he has never won a main draw match on this surface. Against a player with the kind of serve Isner has, it looks doubtful this will become the first time he wins one.

Isner v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

With Isner at his best where his serve gets the extra mileage, one can expect him to blast past his opponent who has never won on clay. Expecting a straight-set win.

Tip: Isner to win in straight sets: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
