Sevastova Makes Quarterfinal at Eastbourne

Sevastova’s only grass court appearance this season came in Eastbourne and for a while it looked like she wouldn’t be making it to the main draw. After losing to Christina McHale in the qualifiers, Sevastova then made it to the first round as a lucky loser following which began her two-match winning streak that would have given her a lot of confidence.

Because she first defeated Marta Kostyuk but more importantly came through in the second round with a shock win over Cori Gauff, the teenage sensation who, according to some, might not be too far away from going the distance at a Grand Slam.

And while Sevastova fell in her quarterfinal match against Elena Rybakina it wasn’t before she had taken the first set off of her opponent and pushed her to two more tie-breakers.

Sevastova’s 21-17 career record on grass is another pointer towards the fact she can lift her game on this surface and that makes her a dangerous player on her day. Especially against a player who is ranked outside the top 100.

Diyas 8-10 This Season

With just eight of 18 matches won by Diyas and a best of a third round appearance at two of the tournaments she has played this season, it can be safely said she hasn’t had the best of years.

Having begun 2021 ranked 80th in the world, Diyas has now fallen to 101st as a result and will need to conjure up her best tennis to have any chance here.

Her overall grass court record isn’t too brilliant either, reading a mediocre 12-13. Before this season’s only win on grass that came in Nottingham for Diyas, she had last scooped up a victory on this surface way back in 2018.

And now that she takes on a player coming off a solid showing, having taken down two good players, it does look Diyas’ days in the singles draw could be numbered.

Sevastova v Diyas Prediction and Tip

It shouldn’t be too much of a worry for Sevastova to get past Diyas here, but we could see a few games here as her opponent gives her a fight.
