Andy Murray has withdrawn from the 2017 US Open because of an injury. He joins a growing list of high-profile casualty who will be missing this year’s final Grand Slam.
The world number two whose first ever Grand Slam title came at the US Open in 2012, has had an ongoing hip injury issue and Murray took the decision to withdraw from the competition after the final practice session.
Murray hadn’t played any tennis since the Wimbledon earlier this year, and even there he had been struck by injury issues. He went out in the quarter-finals to Sam Querrey.

Speaking to the media, Murray, who was expected to take to the court for his opener against USA’s 104th-ranked Tennys Sandgren, explained his decision:
“It’s too sore for me to win the tournament and ultimately that’s what I was here to try and do.”
What that withdrawal meant was that it will be for the first time that the Scot won’t participate in a Grand Slam tournament since the 2013 French Open.
Murray’s hip problem has troubled him throughout his early 20s but he revealed that it was aggravated at the 2017 French Open during the defeat at the hands of Stan Wawrinka.

Since the 2017 Wimbledon, he had been trying to rehabilitate from his hip problem but despite withdrawals from Montreal and Cincinnati, he was unable to get himself in prime condition.
Murray added:
“I did pretty much everything that I could to get myself ready here and took a number of weeks off after Wimbledon. I obviously spoke to a lot of hip specialists. Tried resting, rehabbing, to try and get myself ready here. I was actually practising OK the last few days.”
This year’s US Open has already lost Novak Djokovic, Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic to injuries.
The loss of another high-profile player like Murray means Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are the last two standing among the experienced veterans while the likes of Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov could actually stand bit of a chance to go the distance.
