Anderson’s Groping for Form
He is a former Wimbledon finalist, having also earlier reached the title-deciding round at US Open but has fallen off the cliff in recent times.
The former world number five is now outside the top 100 as form and fitness concerns have made life difficult for the South African. This year, for instance, Anderson has won four matches in main draw of tournaments and has been reduced to playing in Challengers to get some practice under his belt.
Like for instance, he featured at the two editions of Nottingham Challenger tournaments, winning and losing two matches apiece. And when he did try to qualify for the ATP Eastbourne, Anderson fell in the first round of qualifiers itself.
The good news for Anderson despite this bleak outlook is two-fold – one he has a high pedigree on grass and some times it’s about clicking and it could all come back.
Secondly, he kick-starts his Wimbledon campaign against a player ranked 210th in the world which should help him ease into the tournament. A win here will go a long way in doing that.

Barrios Vera Qualifies for Maiden Grass Tournament
The only time that Barrios Vera had featured on grass before this was in the first round of the Antalya Open qualifiers in 2019. And predictably, the then-21-year-old had lost that match.
Since then, he hasn’t attempted any other grass court appearances and now in his first attempt at qualifying for the main draw at Wimbledon, Barrios Vera won three qualifiers to make it through.
And this opening round match against Anderson will be just be the Chilean’s six career main draw encounter, and the second of the season.
In his first, having qualified for the Cordoba Open by winning three matches, he was given a direct entry into the second round where he went down fighting to Jozef Kovalik.
Grass isn’t his most favourite surface – Barrios Vera is more a clay-courter – but the confidence from winning the qualifiers and the exuberance of youth could be a factor here.
Anderson v Barrios Vera Prediction and Tip
Anderson starts out an overwhelming favourite at 1/4 but a straight-set win looks highly dubious. The South African to win but to drop a set on his way.
Tip: Anderson to win AND Both players to win a set: 7/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
