Jelena Ostapenko v Leylah Annie Fernandez Head to Head
This is the first meeting between the two ladies on the WTA Tour.

Ostapenko Coming in on the Heels of a Great Run
24-year-old Jelena Ostapenko arrived in London for the Grand Slam after a superb run in Eastbourne International last week. The Latvian won the WTA 500 event, beating Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina, and Anett Kontaveit en route to her first singles title since October 2019 (Luxembourg Open).
It has been a long wait for Ostapenko to enjoy glory like this and the timing of it could not have been better. Wimbledon is a tournament where she has enjoyed some success in the past – a quarterfinal run in 2017, a semifinal stint in 2018 and reaching the final of the mixed doubles in 2019 with Robert Lindstedt.
Ostapenko is heading into this familiar territory with a great deal of momentum – something that makes her a definite threat and can allow her to win her second Grand Slam.
Her form in the first half of the season wasn’t that exciting; a third-round stint in the Miami Open and a quarterfinal run in the Italian Open was the best she could do across the plethora of events she played in.
That said, Ostapenko over her career has beaten several top 10 players, especially when she was roaring with confidence a few seasons back. So for obvious reasons, this game against the Canadian teenager shouldn’t prove to be that difficult.

Fernandez Handed a Tricky Start
19-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez is competing in her first Wimbledon and in all fairness, she could have hoped for a better start.
Still young and full of confidence, Fernandez still has ways to go on the WTA Tour before she truly establishes herself as a force to be reckoned with. However, this is not to say that she can’t put up a fight. Earlier this year, she won her maiden singles title in the Monterrey Open, beating Viktorija Golubic in the final.
That title run was the sole highlight of her season. In other tournaments, the Canadian couldn’t quite manage to move past the early rounds. That, in part, may also be due to the fact that her opponents were significantly more experienced and stronger than her.
In the Birmingham Classic, Fernandez fell to Ons Jabeur in round two while in the French Open, she was beaten by Madison Keys. But then, she has also incurred losses against lowly-ranked players like Mihaela Buzarnescu, Ana Konjuh, and Viktoriya Tomova.
