Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

They have never faced off at the highest level but have played each other on the Challenger circuit. It’s 1-1 with both matches having come on hard court surface, in 2019.

Tsonga 1-9 Since 2020

Tsonga has been at the receiving end of some criticism for his lack of results and one can understand why. Since the start of the 2020 season, the Frenchman has played 10 main draw rounds and won just one, a win that came against a fellow veteran Feliciano Lopez.

Earlier this month, Tsonga turned his attention to grass with an appearance at Eastbourne but managed just seven games in his defeat to Egor Gerasimov.

What Tsonga probably needs is a string of matches where he starts to get some of his rhythm back. It wasn’t too long back when he was winning for fun, coming into the 2020 season with two ATP titles under his belt.

Incidentally, even those results had come on the back of an injury-filled previous season in which Tsonga had played just 12 matches. Can he find some of that 2019 rhythm?

Ymer’s Yet to Win on Grass

It’s early days in Ymer’s career and he hasn’t played too much of grass court tennis but the fact is he enters Wimbledon this year on the back of zero wins on this surface.

His first foray on grass came in 2019 when Ymer played a couple of Challenger competitions, winning a round apiece at that level but that was followed by a qualifying ouster at Wimbledon.

This year Ymer lost in the first round of the Nottingham Challenger, and after qualifying for Eastbourne International, he fell in straight sets to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opener.

While against Tsonga, Ymer will fancy his chances after the kind of form his opponent has shown, his own lack of experience on grass could show up – making this bit of a contest alright. Can Ymer register his maiden grass court win?
