Collins Fights Back to Defeat Hercog

Danielle Collins overcame dogged resistance from Polona Hercog to book her spot in the second round of Wimbledon for the second time.

Collins, who reached the third round in 2019, will be looking to equal her best showing at Wimbledon when she takes on the Swiss dangerous floater Viktorija Golubic.

The American hits 24 winners to 33 unforced errors, which is not the most ideal return. But judging by the toolbox of shots at Hercog’s disposal, Collins was bound to struggle to prevent an error-strewn game from the back fo the court.

Collins, who is synonymous for being a one-dimensional player, brought a lot of variety to the table in this match as she tried to combat with the Slovenian’s slice. She dashed to the tape 21 times, winning 17 points. That translated to about 81% of net points.

Golubic Masterminds Kudermetova Stunner

A week ago, Viktorija Golubic shocked her countrywoman Belinda Bencic at the Viking International in Eastbourne, beating her accomplished compatriot in straight sets en route to the quarterfinals.

And Golubic was quick to prove that win was no fluke, as she authored another stunning upset of the number 29 seed Veronika Kudermetova under chilly weather on Court 15. She was the only Swiss player competing on Monday’s rain-interrupted schedule and won in a pulsating 3-6 6-1 11-9 in two hours and 45 minutes.

Golubic had not tasted a Grand Slam main draw win for two years, the last of which came on these parts in 2019. The 28-year-old was a protagonist of her own downfall for most of the match, and she was in danger of losing her second Grand Slam after holding match points.

The two players traded the first two sets, and it was the Swiss lady who took the initiative of of breaking serve twice to storm into a 5-3 lead. She had two match points on Kudermetova’s serve which were quickly snuffed out. And after failing to serve for the match in the next game, the writing was very much on the wall.

Except that there was a curious twist of fate. This time it was Golubic’s moment to shine. Kudermetova gifted her opponent another break with an untimely double fault when the match went the distance, and Golubic closed the final set 11-9.
