Sloane Stephens v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between these two at the highest level but they did face off two times on the ITF circuit a few years ago. Those two matches came in 2008 and 2009 and Ahn won both times.

Stephens Stuns Kvitova

While Stephens had shown signs of a resurrection during the clay swing with a a quarterfinal in Charleston, semifinal in Parma and a fourth round appearance at French Open, grass hasn’t traditionally been her favourite surface.

Sure, she has made it to quarterfinal at one of the editions of Wimbledon but since that appearance in 2013, she has won six matches across six seasons in this tournament.

And then again, Stephens was playing Petra Kvitova, a former Wimbledon champion, in her first round match. Not too many, including bookmakers expected her to make much of a match of it with the American going in at 7/2 underdog odds to win it.

Win she did but more importantly Stephens won comfortably.

In just an hour and 18 minutes, Stephens had sidetracked Kvitova, winning 6-3, 6-4 with her ability to win 78% of her first serve points coming to her rescue every time she was in trouble.

Stephens was broken just one in the entire match and aided by Kvitova’s 20 unforced errors, she sealed her second round berth.

Ahn Makes it Through in Seesaw Battle

Ahn was one of two lucky losers to have found a place in the main draw of this year’s Wimbledon and she sure has made it count with a fighting first round performance against Heather Watson.

The world number 117, who had previously never won a main draw match in this tournament, was down a set and unable to take advantage of a break in the second – pushing it into a tie-breaker.

And while Ahn then carved out an equaliser in that tie-breaker, she lost her serve in the very first game of the decider. Watson had a chance to serve for the match, missed a match-point before the American came storming back to convert her first match-point at 7-6 on her opponent’s serve.

The American won the nearly-three-hour match 2-6, 7-6 (3), 8-6 to ensure her career-best showing at Wimbledon already. Can she now go past the erratic, but in-form Stephens?

Stephens v Ahn Prediction and Tip

As one-sided matches go, Stephens is a huge favourite in this one with bet365 offering 1/6 for her win but I will be wary of that given Stephens has her moments at times. A fighting match could be on the cards and one that sees a third set as well.

Tip: Stephens to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
