Martincova in Fine Fiddle on Grass

A quarterfinal appearance in each of her two tournaments before Wimbledon would have given Martincova the kind of confidence one needs coming into a tournament as big as this. And she lived up to those expectations with a fine first round win over Alison Riske who was a favourite coming into the match.

Martincova, a 6/4 underdog against Riske, registered a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win in her opener, needing over two hours to make it to the second round.

Martincova broke her opponent five times in the entire match, while dropping her serve just twice.

And while she hit just 18 winners to Riske’s 24, it was her ability to keep her unforced errors down to 21 that helped her no end.

The question now is if Martincova can continue to push her opponents, including one who is ranked about 50 places ahead.

Podoroska Makes Solid Beginning on Clay

Before the start of this season, Podoroska’s only match on grass had come in the qualifying round of the 2017 Wimbledon. She had lost it in a fighting three-setter but never played on grass again.

That’s until this season, where as a 39th-ranked player, Podoroska showed she isn’t just a one-trick pony – i.e. a clay court specialist – by kick-starting her grass court campaign with a quarterfinal appearance at Bad Homburg.

And now, starting out her first ever appearance in the main draw at Wimbledon against Ann Li, the 2/1 underdog Podoroska came through 6-4, 7-6 (1) in a keenly-contested match.

In a match lasting an hour and 38 minutes, the difference between the two players turned out to be that one extra break of serve – Podoroska’s five to her opponent’s four – and a flawless second set tie-breaker.

Interestingly, Podoroska was outdone in the winners/unforced errors stats, with Li finishing on a positive three while the Argentine getting a negative six on that.

And yet, when the going got tough, Podoroska found a way to win it.

Against Martincova, it could be a battle of two equals though despite the obvious difference in their rankings.

Martincova v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

While on paper, Martincova is the favourite at 8/11 to win this, Podoroska cannot be ignored for the manner in which she crashed Li’s party. She starts 11/10 here and we could see a gruelling encounter that goes into a third.
