Evans Eased Past Veteran Lopez

As Feliciano Lopez continued to extend his Grand Slam appearance record of having not missed any since 2002, it was Dan Evans who had the last laugh in a match that was held over from Monday’s drizzle.

The British No. 1 eased into the second round on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-6 6-2 7-5 victory in a little over two hours. Evans who is seeded at number 22 at this year’s Championships, needed to be patient and clutch when he stared at his opportunities.

The match itself was a spectacle for sore eyes. Both players are renowned for their dexterous hands, but their finesse and work ethic were also on full show. Evans’ killer slice met its match. While Lopez’s shot might not have the zeal which the Brit brings to the table, he was still able to run him close in the first set in which none of the two players dropped serve.

But it was the veteran Spaniard who was first to blink in the ensuing tiebreak and Evans went to win it 7-4, with one minibreak difference.

The second set was more of Lopez going for Spanish siesta as he ceded his serve to love in the sixth game. Evans went on to break him against in game eight to take a commanding two-sets lead.

The third set was highly competitive, with the World No. 26 saving two breaks points at 3-3 to eke out a crucial hold. And as the set went into sudden death, it was Lopez who crumbled under the scoreboard pressure when he was broken at 6-5 while serving to stay in the match.

Lajovic Beats Simon to Advance

Dusan Lajovic nearly made a melee of his first-round match against Gilles Simon, as he threw away a two-sets-to-love lead to hand the Frenchman a way back into the tie. The match as a contest had looked done and dusted when he broke to take a 3-1 lead in the third set.

Following heavy rain on Monday that washed away many of the day’s play including postponing unplayed matches, this match between Lajovic and Simon was affected, with the first ball being struck on Tuesday evening.

But Simon is a wily competitor who mounted an extraordinary comeback, breaking Lajovic’s serve twice in the next two sets to force a decider.

The match entered its fourth hour in the fifth set, and remarkably it was the veteran Simon who faltered at 4-3 to give the cushion back to his Serbian opponent. Overall, Lajovic fired 51 winners and landed 70% of his first serves to confirm his progress.

Evans v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

The added pressure of being British No. 1 has given Evans an extra incentive to perform well at his home Slam. He looks a solid bet to advance into the next round unscathed.
