Roger Federer v Richard Gasquet Head to Head
The players have met 20 times and Federer leads the head-to-head 18-2. The last time Gasquet won was on the clay of Rome in 2011, which was also the last time he won a set against the Swiss. Federer has now won 10 straight matches against Gasquet and not dropped a set in any of them.

Federer Lucky In Scratchy Opener
Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer returned to the grass courts of the All England Tennis Club with plenty of questions from himself and from others. The Swiss is eying a ninth title, something he fell short of with two championship points in the 2019 final against arch rival Novak Djokovic.
Federer returned to the tour earlier this Spring after two knee surgeries and associated rehabilitation that kept him out of the tour for 14 months amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The Swiss returned to the tour at the Doha ATP 250 in March but has played sparingly still and came to Wimbledon with a 5-3 record in the eight matches he has played.
The questions and clouds of uncertainty remain as Federer advanced to the second round after a very unsure performance which saw his opponent Adrian Mannarino pull out with a twisted knee with the match tied at two sets each.
Federer got off to a good start after a tense opening service game and broke Mannarino at 4-5 on the Frenchman’s serve to close out the first set 6-4. The second went on serve and was headed to a tiebreak were four consecutive forehand errors from the Swiss saw Mannarino close out easily 7-3 .
Tied one set all, and with an air of anxiety around Center Court, the Federer errors piled on as he was broken early in the third and although he broke back for 2-2, he was broken to love again by the Frenchman who closed the set 6-3, with one of the biggest upsets at Wimbledon looming.
Federer looked shaky in the first game of the fourth, saving a break point, but then upped the tempo to break Mannarino and then go up 3-0. As Mannarino faced break points to go down 1-5, some smart play by the Frenchman ensured he held for 2-4 and with Federer down 0-15 on his serve, Mannarino slipped behind the baseline in what looked like an ugly fall potentially twisting his knee. Playing with plenty of discomfort, he could not put up much of a fight as the match was level at two sets all in no time.
Unable to put pressure on the leg and in continued discomfort, Mannarino withdrew at the start of the fifth set, giving the 20-time major title winner a monumental escape and stealing the fans of an opportunity to watch a five set thriller.

Out Of Form Gasquet Prevails In Opener
Two time Wimbledon semi-finalist Richard Gasquet was once ranked number seven in the world, but a mix of injuries and poor form has seen him miss out on many tournaments and lose in early rounds, resulting in a world ranking of number 51 at the moment.
The Frenchman did not play much early in the year due to fitness issues and when he did return to the outdoor and indoor hard courts, it was not the best of runs. Moving onto the clay, the going remained tough for Gasquet whose best showing was right before the French Open at Lyon where he made the final eight defeating Argentine Diego Schwartzman before falling to Russian Karen Khachanov.
Gasquet’s Roland Garros campaign was cut short by running into Rafa Nadal in the second round and the grass build-up included him playing at the Nottingham Challenger only to lose out in the quarters as the top seed.
Up against Japanese veteran Yuichi Sugita in the opener here at Wimbledon, the Frenchman was pushed to a set apiece but then adjusted well to the grass courts to close out 6-2, 6-1 in the third and fourth sets respectively, setting up a second round against a very familiar opponent who he has struggled against in the past.
Federer v Gasquet Prediction and Tip
Federer has not looked himself since the comeback and having played 10 matches, the signs are imminent that even for him a comeback at this age is challenging. That being said, he will consider himself very lucky to have come away from the opener and will hope to make the most against a player he knows only too well.
While there is a lot of work needed to be done by the Swiss, he will look to use this breath of life to his advantage in the rounds to come. There are many on the tour who can trouble him now, but Gasquet currently is not one of them.
Expect a straight sets Federer win.
