If one thought Krejcikova’s run of fortunes was restricted to clay, she proved otherwise in the first round here at Wimbledon. The Czech, who climbed up to number 17 on the charts, crushed Clara Tauson to seal what was her first ever victory on grass.
Krejcikova, who was 1/2 favourite in the opener, needed an hour and 11 minutes to move past Tauson, winning 6-3, 6-2.
Where Krejcikova outdid her opponent was her second serves – she won 62% of those as compared to Tauson who managed just 21%. The chief cause of this was Tauson’s unforced error count which read a whopping 26 while Krejcikova was at 13.
What makes this interesting is Tauson herself had come into the tournament on the back of some solid form which included a maiden title victory earlier this year. That she was routed the manner in which she was by a player who had never won a main draw match on grass was down to the latter’s confidence.
And it’s this very confidence which should see her through here too.

Petkovic Pans Paolini in Opener
Much like Krejcikova, Petkovic managed a straight-set win in her first round as well, defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-3.
In a match that lasted an hour and eight minutes, Petkovic slammed six aces and hammered 18 winners to get past her Italian opponent.
The match began with five breaks of serves in a row before Petkovic finally held on to take a 4-2 lead in the opening set. And while Paolini did get herself a break-point as Petkovic served for the set she failed to exploit it, allowing the latter to go one up.
Petkovic grabbed the bull by its horns in the second set, carving out two breaks of serves and a 4-0 lead as a result. And while the 33-year-old veteran of three appearances in the third round at Wimbledon dropped her serve once again, she helped herself to another break that helped her pocket the match.
