Badosa Notches up First Wimbledon Win

Badosa’s form elsewhere has been much to talk about and has seen her rise to her career-best ranking of 33rd but talk about grass and she hasn’t done a lot on it.

The Spaniard, who had a 17-3 win-loss record on clay this season including a title in Belgrade, had earlier played in just one match on grass in 2021. And she had lost it to Elina Svitolina in a three-setter in Eastbourne last week.

Which is also why it did not come as too much of a surprise when Badosa was stretched to a third set by countrywoman Aliona Bolsova. In a match lasting an hour and 46 minutes, Badosa notched up a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win thanks mainly due to her strong serving and solid first serve.

While Bolsova did blast off 37 winners to Badosa’s 32, her unforced errors count of 38 allowed her opponent to take control of the match.

Badosa will be relieve with the win too, a monkey off the back at Wimbledon. With that confidence under her belt, she will take on Putintseva knowing she has a good chance of going deeper.

Putintseva Sends Out Pironkova

Tsvetana Pironkova is on bit of a comeback trail but a late withdrawal from Lesia Tsurenko meant she might not have been in the best frame of mind as a lucky loser to take to court. Which is probably why Putintseva went into their match with a bit of an advantage.

And she ensured she didn’t let go of that, hammering Pironkova 6-3, 6-1 to enter the second round. The match lasted an hour and six minutes.

There was some fight on show in the first round from Pironkova, especially as she broke back to level the scoreline at 3-3 but Putintseva broke her three times in a row to not just wrap up the opening set but also take a 3-0 lead in the second.

Pironkova managed to stall the runaway Putintseva for a game but that was all that she managed as the Kazakh broke again to complete the rout.

Putintseva, who had earlier started poorly on grass by losing her qualifier at Eastbourne, has now emulated her Wimbledon best. Can she go one better?

Badosa v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

While Putintseva’s fighting spirit cannot be questioned, it’s tough to see her get past Badosa in this one. Might go to a third set though.
