Strong Queens Run Sets Berrettini Up Well For Wimbledon
Italian Next Gen star Matteo Berrettini came to the grass swing confident at the back of good runs this season at the ATP Cup and the Aussie Open 2021 earlier in the year, and more recently at Belgrade and Madrid on the clay and then at the French Open.
With a Stuttgart title in 2019 and a good overall grass run the same year, the Italian was the top seed at the Queens club last week. Berrettini had an excellent run at the ATP 500 at Queens’ Club, with some convincing wins against the likes of Andy Murray, Dan Evans, Alex de Minaur and Cam Norrie among others as he won the second grass title of his career.
Coming into Wimbledon high on confidence and earmarked as one of the favorites after Novak Djokovic, Berrettini was up against 2019 Wimbledon quarter-finalist Guido Pella and it was a tight match initially with Berrettini adjusting to the SW19 grass and Pella playing with confidence, as the players split the first two sets. However, the Italian increased in confidence and aggressive play in the third to win it 6-3 and rode the momentum for a quick 6-0 fourth set and a spot in the second round.

Dutchman Prevails In Hard-Fought Opener
Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp made his debut this year at the majors playing at the Aussie Open where he lost in the first round, but then overcame a two-sets-to-love deficit to upset 19th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the first round of the French Open last month.
With a career high ranking of 139 right now, he was a Lucky Loser who qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon due to the late withdrawal from Dominic Thiem.
The Dutchman played France’s Gregoire Barrere in the first round and the match was a back and forth duel from the second set after Van de Zandschulp won a comfortable opener. The Frenchman took the second set in a close tie-break and when he lost the third set 1-6, it looked all but over for Barrere.
A strong comeback by Barrere made for an exciting fourth set but good play by Van de Zandschulp in the tiebreak seized it 7-3 and a second round spot for him too.
Berrettini v van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip
The Dutchman has got some matches under his belt through the qualifiers and the opening round, but he is up against one of the strongest players on grass at the moment. Expect a straight sets win for the Italian.
