Jordan Thompson v Kei Nishikori Head to Head

Their only previous encounter came at the 2017 Brisbane International and Nishikori had won that one 6-1, 6-1. Can Thompson better his performance this time around?

Thompson Delivers Ruud Shock

Going into his opening round match against Casper Ruud as an 8/5 rank outsider, Thompson looked to have frittered away a two-set advantage to his Norwegian opponent. Out of the blue, however, Thompson rediscovered his rhythm in the final set to carve out a five-set victory and reach the second.

Thompson, who had never won a match in four previous appearances at Wimbledon, saved a set-point in the opening set tie-breaker before clinching it 8-6. In the second, Thompson was a break up, only to squander that but win the set in a tie-breaker again to go two up.

And then his game fizzled away.

He saved four break-points in the third game, but wasn’t able to do so in the next two games to lose the set. And when Ruud broke Thompson in the first game of the fourth set again, things looked to have spiralled out of control for the Aussie.

Thompson turned things around in the final set by holding on to his serve in the first two games and breaking his opponent in the fourth game. Serving to stay in the match, Ruud was sent packing yet again as Thompson moved into round two after nearly four hours of battle.

Nishikori Prevents All-Aussie Battle

Even as Thompson needed to battle past Ruud in his opener, Nishikori did not have any problems getting past another Aussie, Alexei Popyrin in his first round encounter.

Nishikori routed Popyrin 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in just over two hours to seal his second round berth for the ninth successive time at Wimbledon.

There were break-points galore for both players but while Nishikori held his nerve to save seven of them, he managed to break Popyrin three times from the 11 opportunities he got.

There wasn’t much to choose between the two players either with Nishikori ending with 30 winners and 22 unforced errors while Thompson having 28-23 stats for it. In the end, it was Nishikori’s experience at the big points which stood out and he came through.

Can he beat hiss second Aussie opponent in a row here?

Thompson v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

Nishikori is a favourite here at 2/7 but more vitally we believe he shouldn’t have a lot of trouble getting past his opponent either.
