Frenchman Chardy had come into the competition on a four-match losing streak but that did not stop him from going after the big gun. The 34-year-old found himself a way to stun Aslan Karatsev in the opening round at Wimbledon and will now be aiming for his first ever third round slot at a Grand Slam since 2016.
In the twilight of his career, Chardy scored one of his best recent victories when he crushed the Australian Open semifinalist and Dubai title winner Karatsev in straight sets.
Chardy was on court for two hours and 29 minutes as he carved out a 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Karatsev. Stunningly there was just one break of serve in the entire match, one that came in the third set with a total of 11 other break-points served by the two players.
It was Chardy’s 20 unforced errors, to his opponent’s 38 that saved the day for the Frenchman in the end even as he slammed 37 winners to go with that.
He takes on the in-form Ivashka in round two.

Ivashka Eases Past Munar
While Jaume Munar, especially on grass, cannot be put in the same quality basket as Aslan Karatsev, Ivashka wouldn’t mind his straight-set win over the former in his opening round match.
Ivashka had gone into the encounter as a heavy favourite and lived up to that top billing with a 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over Munar to seal his second round berth.
Having come into this tournament with a quarterfinal appearance at Eastbourne as a qualifier, Ivashka looked to have benefitted from that four-match winning run in that competition as he raced off to a two hour, 28 minute victory.
Interestingly, Ivashka faced a mere two break-points in the entire match, saved one and while he got broken once, he also retaliated with five breaks of his own.
Will that be enough to get past Chardy though? We would like to think so.
Chardy v Ivashka Prediction and Tip
Ivashka younger legs could give him some advantage here and that has him as the favourite for both, the bookmakers and for us. For a riskier punt, both players to win a set too.
