Elise Mertens v Madison Keys Head to Head
Keys leads Mertens by 2-0, last defeating the American in the 2019 Australian Open with 6-3, 6-2.
Keys Reaches Third Round with Ease
So far in Wimbledon, Madison Keys hasn’t faced any major problems in overcoming her early-round opponents. Starting with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the British qualifier Katie Swan in the opener, she next defeated Lauren Davis with 6-1, 6-4.
The former top-10 player is seeking her first singles title since the Cincinnati Open in 2019 – since then, she has reached the final of just one other WTA event on the tour – the Brisbane International in 2020.
Keys started her season in Qatar Open and it wasn’t until the beginning of the grass swing that she managed to find some rhythm on the tour. In the Middle East swing, the best she could do was reach round two while in Miami, Charleston, and Madrid, Keys lost her opening-round bouts.
She found some reprieve in French Open when she reached the third round but was beaten by Victoria Azarenka in straight sets.
Needless to say, the 26-year-old is still behind from the glory days of her career back in 2017-19. Her form has taken a dip over the last couple of seasons as Keys struggles to deliver deep runs. Most recently, she played in Berlin where she fell to Liudmila Samsonova in the quarterfinal. However, she did beat Aryna Sabalenka in the tournament to register her first top 10 win of the season.

Mertens Breezes past Zhu
Elise Mertens made easy work of her second-round opponent Lin Zhu, as she beat the Chinese 6-2, 6-0. This win was in line with her opening-round win over Harriet Dart with 6-1, 6-3.
In all fairness, the Belgian was primed to these fixtures on account of her experience and ranking. However, things could have gone astray just as easily for her, especially seeing that she lost in the first round in Birmingham and Eastbourne, respectively to Ajla Tomljanovic and Cori Gauff.
But keeping aside these inconsistencies, Mertens has enjoyed a good year so far. She won the Gippsland Trophy in February and reached the final in the Istanbul Cup. Between these two events, the #16-ranked played also reached the semifinal in Dubai and the fourth round in Miami.
Having made it to the fourth round in the 2019 Wimbledon, Mertens will fancy another run like this, provided she can overcome Keys.
Mertens v Keys Prediction and Tip
This is a close game to call but purely going by recent form, Mertens will start as the odds-on favourite.
However, Keys has got something that she doesn’t – a superior record in Grand Slams and on the tour, in addition to a good run against the top-ranked players on the WTA Tour. Plus, every single final that Keys are reached on the WTA singles tour has been a Premier event or above.
