Polish Number Three Frech Hoping to Improve Rankings

The third ranked Polish player after Iga Swiatek and Magda Linette, Frech has been ranked as high as 115 in the world, although since she has slipped in the standings.

She made her senior WTA debut in 2013, and her first Grand Slam appearance five years later,  but the best she has managed at a major tournament was in 2018, when she got to the second round of the French Open. She failed though to qualify for either Roland Garros or Wimbledon this year.

Frech spends the vast majority of her time on the junior tours, winning four singles and four doubles titles on the ITF Circuit, the most recent of those triumphs coming in Canberra, last January, on a hard court,

Her best result of 2021 to date came in an ITF event in Charleston in May, where she got to the semi-finals before losing to the American Madison Brengle.

Melkinova’s Second Main Draw Appearance of 2021

Although she turned professional back in 2005, Melnikova has never been ranked higher than 170 in the world in singles, and it is in doubles that she has enjoyed her greatest success on the senior tour, reaching the fianl of the Katowice Open in Poland in 2016 when partnered by compatriot Valentyna Iyakhenko.

She spends the vast majority of her time on the ITF circuit where she have won six titles and been in a further eight finals, the most recent of which was in April this year when she lost in Qeiras, Portugal to the Spaniard Maria Gutiérrez Carrasco.

This is the second time this year she has made the main draw of a  senior WTA event – she came through qualifying in Nottingham, before losing to the Belgium player Alison van Uytvanck in the second round.

In the first round of qualifying, she was leading Noma Akugue Noha by a set and was a break up, when her German opponent was forced to retire.

And then, on Tuesday, she faced another German in the shape of Katharina Hobgarski, the world number 291, and beat her easily in straight sets.

Frech v Melkinova Prediction and Tip

Neither woman is used to appearing in the main draws of senior WTA events, so there is little form to act as a reliable guide to the outcome of this match. Frech, though, is the higher ranked player, and she will start the favourite.
