Zidansek Returns to Clay Courts

After a first-round exit at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, Tamara Zidansek is back to her playground – a clay court.

The 23-year-old was handed a chasting opener at SW19 against Karolina Pliskova. But despite a straight-sets defeat, she gave the experienced Czech her toughest bout before the semifinal, taking the most games (9) than against any other player she faced.

Zidansek broke new ground at a Grand Slam at last month’s French Open. She was ranked 85th in the world at the start of the tournament. But after a maiden top 10 win in which she saved a match point to beat Bianca Andreescu in the opening round, her confidence reached stratospheric levels.

The Slovenian went from strength to strength in subsequent rounds as she took advantage of a genrous draw that saw a host of top seeds elimnated. She garnered victories over in-form players like Sorana Cirstea and Paula Badosa en route to an unlikely semifinal.

In spite of a close two-set defeat to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Zidansek broke the top 50 for the first time after that scintillating run and will now have the luxury of getting automatic main draw spots at most WTA tournaments.

Pliskova Looks to Follow Sister’s Footsteps

Kristyna Pliskova will aim to follow her twin sister’s footsteps by beating Tamara Zidansek. The more accomplished Pliskova beat the Slovenian at Wimbledon, but could lightning strike twice on the World No. 47?

The Czech lefty picked up just her second main draw win after winning her first-round match in Hamburg. She beat Romania’s Irina Bara 6-2 7-6 in a straightforward fashion in an hour and 38 minutes.

Pliskova converted three out of eight breakpoints and won an impressive 77% of first-serve points. Although she dropped her serve once at the start of the second set, she recovered and never looked in danger.

With a current ranking of World No. 106, Pliskova’s 2021 season has been largely disappointing. She has suffered nine first-round exits from 11 tournaments. Despite possessing an aggressive style of play, which is not dissimilar to her sister Karolina, she lacks consistency and as a consequence has seen her ranking fall from lofty heights.

But on a bright note, Kristyna Pliskova can be a nuisance to play at times. She pushed Barbora Krejcikova to three sets at this year’s French Open and should certainly not be underestimated to make her second-round match in Hamburg a close one.

Zidansek v Pliskova Prediction and Tip

Zidansek is now getting accustomed to opening-round byes at these WTA 250 events due to her top 50 ranking. On paper, she is the overwhelming favorite to return to her winning habit on clay against an opponent who has endured a shocking year.
