Fourth seed Danielle Collins survived a second-round scare as she rallied from a set down to beat 161st-ranked Kristina Kucova of Slovakia on Thursday.

Broken twice in the first set, the American could win just one of the first seven games, but she made a strong comeback in the next set and then wrapped up the match in the third for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win in an hour and 55 minutes.

Ranked No. 48 in the world, Collins served seven aces and also had seven double faults in the match. She converted five of 11 break points in the match and saved four of eight.

The 27-year-old American, who received a first-round bye, improved to 14-7 in 2021.

An Australian Open semifinalist in 2019 and a French Open quarterfinalist in 2020, Collins was a semifinalist at the Phillip Island Trophy earlier this year. She also featured in the quarterfinals of the Yarra Valley Classic and Adelaide International, where she defeated World No. 1 Ash Barty in the Round of 16.

Collins underwent a surgery for endometeriosis following a second-round defeat to Veronika Kudermetova at the Miami Open.

She returned to action at Roland Garros, winning her first two rounds against Xiyu Wang and Anhelina Kalinina, before going down to Serena Williams in the third round.

Collins, who was beaten by Karolina Pliskova in the second round of the Australian Open, also reached the second round of Wimbledon. She bounced back after losing the first set to beat Polona Hercog in the first round but went down to Viktorija Golubic in the Round of 64.

Ruse on a Roll

Facing Collins in the quarterfinal will be Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who notched her fourth win in four days on Thursday, defeating Germany’s Anna Zaja in straight sets in the Round of 16.

Ruse converted five of 10 break points and saved one of two to beat the German player 6-2, 6-2 in 69 minutes.

The Romanian, ranked 198th in the world, had qualified for the main draw with straight sets victories over Liang En-shuo and Isabella Shinikova on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

Ruse, then caused a huge upset in the tournament, knocking out sixth seed Jil Teichmann of Switzerland 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) in the first round on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Romanian improved to 14-7 this year in all tournaments across levels. The two wins at Hamburg are her first main draw victories on the tour this year.

Collins v Ruse Prediction and Tip

Although Collins had a tough time in the first set on Thursday, she found her rhythm as the contest progressed. Expect her to keep the momentum going against Ruse in the quarterfinal. That said, she will be wary of Ruse’s current form and won’t take her lightly.
