Steve Johnson v Denis Kudla Head to Head

This rivalry has been around since 2011, when they met on the Futures circuit and has seen them face off in the Challengers and ATP competitions, making it six matches between them.

Overall Johnson leads 5-1, but at the highest level it’s 1-1 with Kudla finally winning his first match against Johnson the last time they faced off and it came in the first round of the 2018 Australian Open.

Johnson Looks to be Turning the Corner

Returning back to the fold this year after an injury forced him to miss the start of the season, Johnson made a slow start to his tennis season.

In fact it was a poor beginning, as Johnson lost five matches in a row including two in the opening rounds of Challenger events, and when he went into French Open on the back of those losses, drawing another American Frances Tiafoe in his opener, he was a whopping 4/1 to cause an upset.

That’s exactly what he did, defeating Tiafoe in five.

Johnson then had similar odds against Thiago Monteiro and won again in the second round before finally going down to Pablo Carreno-Busta in the third.

At Wimbledon, a now rejuvenated Johnson overcame Dennis Novak in his opener while losing to Taylor Fritz in a fighting five-setter in the second.

He now starts off against a player who loves grass but with confidence he can put up a solid fight.

Kudla Coming off Solid Grass Show

There are those who reckon Kudla might have won multiple ATP titles had more tournaments been played on grass. He has definitely shown this year he can make it count on this surface, having begun on the Challenger circuit with a couple of excellent performances before showing what he is capable of at Wimbledon.

After making it to the final of Nottingham Challenger, Kudla lost to Tiafoe and then entered the quarterfinals at the second Challenger competition held in the same city.

And then having to qualify for Wimbledon, he cruised through it without dropping a set before falling a win short of his best ever showing at this tournament. Wins over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Andreas Seppi took him to the third round where he went down to Novak Djokovic.

He should start a favourite here against Johnson.

Johnson v Kudla Prediction and Tip

Kudla’s showing on grass makes him a tempting pick for not just this match but right throughout the tournament – on his day he should be able to overcome most players in this draw. Expect him to come through in three sets here.
