2020 was a tough year for most players and it was no different for Karlovic but the 42-year-old hasn’t played in a lot of tennis since the pandemic made tennis pause.
An opening round loss at US Open was followed by successive ousters in the qualifiers of events at French Open and Cologne before he called it quits for the season.
This year, Karlovic has featured in three ATP main level tournaments and a Challenger and has won just one main draw match. That came at Delray Beach at the start of the year. Since then a qualifying defeat in Miami, a first round loss at Tallahassee Challenger and a failure to get past the Wimbledon qualifiers might have made Karlovic think again.
He now takes to court for another grass court encounter in Newport – it’s a surface that should suit him given his height and serving capabilities. Can he get his game in order though?

Zapata Miralles Not Much of a Grass Player
It’s a surprise Zapata Miralles has opted to take part in Newport Open given he hasn’t played too much on grass anyway. In fact before this season, Zapata Miralles’ only match on grass had come in the qualifiers of Hertogenbosch in 2018 and he had lost that one.
This year, however, the Spaniard has been much improved on this surface. At least by his own inexperienced standards.
He won a qualifying round at Queen’s and while he failed to proceed to the main draw of that event, Zapata Miralles then went on to carve out three more victories at Wimbledon to make it to the main draw there.
Zapata Miralles then took Cristian Garin to five sets, blowing away a two sets to one lead but that would have been enough for him to think he has a shot on this surface. And against an opponent who has been struggling he could win his first ever match on grass.
Karlovic v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip
While Karlovic is way more seasoned campaigner, it remains to be seen how he comes up against a player who has been fast improving and could make life difficult for the tall-serving Croat. Expecting a Zapata Miralles win.
