Yuichi Sugita v Jurij Rodionov Head to Head

It’s been some time since Sugita won a match at any level. In fact it was six matches and nearly four months ago he won his last competitive encounter, making it to the semifinal at Lugano Challenger.
Since then, the Japanese player’s fortunes have fallen apart as he’s gone from one loss to another – falling in first rounds at a couple of Challenger tournaments, failing to qualify for Belgrade Open and Munich and then losing his Wimbledon opener.
In his prime, Sugita’s performances on grass have been solid. He has won 14 of his 29 matches on this surface giving him a ratio of 0.48 as compared to 0.17 on clay and 0.38 on hard court surfaces.
And while that will be a stat he would like to keep in mind coming into this one, Sugita will also know he would need to do a lot more than usual to turn things around.

Rodionov Shines on Grass after Lacklustre Year
While he did make it to the final of the Nur-Sultan Challenger earlier this year, Rodionov’s form has been anything but decent. That is, till he reached Stuttgart and finally blossomed into some fine performances.
With wins over Dominik Koepfer and Alex de Minaur, Rodionov marched into the semifinal of the event – making it his first ever appearance at that stage of an ATP tournament.
Rodionov fell to Marin Cilic in that one before he lost in his opener at Halle too and then opted of the Wimbledon qualifiers.
He will come into this opener on the grass courts of Newport with some more confidence than his opponent but can he convert that into a win?
