Jiri Vesely v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players including one in the qualifying rounds at Monte-Carlo earlier this year. Overall, Vesely leads 2-1, while in main draws of tournaments, it’s 2-0 in his favour.
On clay, it’s 1-1 which includes a win for Hanfmann in the aforementioned Monte-Carlo match this season.

In what turned out to be a one-sided contest, Vesely came through his first round match in straight sets against Salvatore Caruso.
Vesely, who was 56-57 on career win-loss on clay before this tournament, carved out a 6-3, 6-2 victory in an hour and 29 minutes to seal his second round berth. In doing so, he registered just his second main draw win on clay this season.
What was so noticeable about the contest was Vesely’s clinical manner. He got himself three break-points and broke every time while on the other hand, saved all the five break-points he faced in the encounter.
It looked like it was turning out to be the close encounter everyone thought it would when neither player broke through till 3-2. Once Vesely drew first blood though in the sixth game, there was no looking back.
He broke two more times in the second set to complete the win and now plays the 107th-ranked Hanfmann in round two.

Hanfmann Returns to Favourite Surface with Win
While Hanfmann hasn’t played a lot of tennis at the highest level and hence doesn’t match up to Vesely’s numbers, he sure has a solid record on clay the times he has actually played.
Coming into this tournament and despite having never bettered his 92nd rank on the ATP charts, Hanfmann has a 17-15 win-loss on this surface. And he made it his 18th win here by registering a punishing win against Thiago Monteiro in his opener.
Hanfmann, who had last won a main draw match on clay in April in Munich, broke the bookmaker’s favourite Monteiro twice in the first set without return.
He then broke his opponent yet again in the second set and while Monteiro levelled things out in the eighth game, Hanfmann clinched the decisive break in the 11th game.
Can Hanfmann now take down Vesely who might not be a clay-specialist but has shown how well he can do.

Hanfmann is a slight favourite at 5/6 with Vesely starts off at 10/11 to win this. Will have to go with Hanfmann here given his better prowess on clay though.
