That’s the number of match wins for Paire this season, three. The first round victory here in Hamburg, which came about after Ricardas Berankis retired from the match because of an injury was just Paire’s third win this year.
Paire’s story is well-chronicled. His strange behaviour on and off the court has forced the French tennis authorities into taking him off the Olympics list. Doubt that bothers him too much.
And the problem is two-fold – his own game has deteriorated drastically but to go with that it looks like he has lost the will to fight through these dark times.
However, if one might add quickly here, there are some positive signs in recent times. Miniscule as they might be, the fact Paire featured in a Challenger tournament immediately after Wimbledon is not such a bad thing.
He also participated in – and lost both of – two matches at the Bundesliga – men’s competition, and even in this opening round match against Berankis, fought on to take the first set into a tie-breaker before his opponent retired.

Pablo Varillas Sends Sumit Packing
Number one Peruvian player Pablo Varillas had made his ATP debut last season in Chile but shot to fame earlier this year when he qualified for Santiago Open and stormed into the quarterfinals there. Wins over Joao Sousa and Federico Coria helped him through to the last eight stage there.
Since then, Pablo Varillas has been involved in multiple Challenger competitions on clay, winning one title, finishing runner-up on one other occasion and making it through to two other semifinals.
With that kind of confidence under his belt it came as no surprise Pablo Varillas started off as a favourite in his opener against the more experienced and India’s Sumit Nagal.
That showed in the result too. He romped to a 6-0, 6-4 win, breaking his opponent four times in the encounter while facing not a single break-point in return.
He will have a decent shot here in the second round against a player who has barely won anything for a while now.

It should come as no surprise Pablo Varillas starts a favourite because most players ranked in the top 200 will start as a favourite against Paire at the moment. Still, we could see some fight here from Paire, going in with his recent showing but for Pablo Varillas to still win.
