Filip Krajinovic’s record for the 2021 season was at 9-10 for the season coming in to Hamburg and he had lost three of his last four matches. Opening round losses at Madrid and Rome on the clay were followed by a straight sets second round defeat to John Isner at Roland Garros. This was followed by a fourth consecutive opening round loss at Wimbledon to Nottingham Challenger winner Aussie Alex Bolt.
Playing German Daniel Altmaier who had just won a Challenger title, it was not going to be an easy opener here at Hamburg. The Serbian took the first set, but the German sneaked the second in a tiebreak going into the decider with the momentum.
Krajinovic played a strong deciding set looking like getting some of his old rhythm back as he prevailed 6-1 going into the next round here on the Hamburg clay.

Impressive Opening Win For Kohlschreiber
37-year-old German Phillip Kohlschreiber was once ranked number 16 in the world and has won eight career ATP titles. He has made the fourth round of a major on ten occassions as well as being a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2021.
He has featured in four tour-level events this year, falling to Domink Koepfer in the first round in Munich; reaching the third round at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals at the Halle Open. He pushed world number ten and eventual semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov to five sets at Wimbledon two weeks ago as well. Kohlschreiber also defeated Fernando Verdasco and Aslan Karatsev at the French Open before falling to Diego Schwartzman.
Up against rising Spaniard Jaime Munar on the clay, Kohlschreiber did not start as the favorite in the opener, but put up a good display for a convincing 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win. The first set was even but the German used his experience in the breaker and then a single break saw him serve smartly to win the next set and the match.
Krajinovic v Kohlschreiber Prediction and Tip
Both players are looking to return to the consistent forms they had a couple seasons ago. While Krajinovic’s 2021 struggles have continued, the German veteran has hit some form in recent weeks and will be inspired with the Munar win. Expect the home conditions to bolster Kohlschreiber to a three sets win.
