Collins Wins Opener Easily

It did not take too much time for Collins to get going in the first round in Budapest as she stormed to a straight-set win over Martina Di Giuseppe.

Collins was on court for an hour and 10 minutes to defeat Di Giuseppe 6-2, 6-1 to make it to round two.

The encounter started with a surprise break of serve for Di Giuseppe in the very first game but once Collins had retaliated with a break of her own there was no looking back for the American. She broke two more times in the opening set and twice more in the second to complete the win.

The American will now fancy her chances of making it two in two given she plays an opponent ranked 186th in the world but her form in recent times hasn’t been up to the scratch. At Hamburg last week, for instance, she won her opener but fell to Elena Gabriela Ruse, a 133rd-ranked player, in the next match.

At Wimbledon, again in the second round, Collins had gone down to Viktorija Golubic, which makes it almost imperative for Collins to break this strange losing sequence.

Jani Topples Cocciaretto

She was 6/4 to win her opener but Jani paid no heed to the odds on offer as she raced off to a straight-set win against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her first round match.

Jani, who has rarely won a match in the main draw this WTA season, needed two hours and 24 minutes to pass the first hurdle as she registered a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

In a match that saw a whopping 26 break-points and eight breaks of serves, it was a decisive one in the ninth game of the opening set that tilted the balance in favour of Jani.

And Jani looked to be running away with the encounter when she took a 5-2 lead in the second set, ready to serve for the match. Unfortunately for her, she needed to take a circuitous path from there on as she was broken back two more times before breaking her opponent a third time.

Can she take this form forward against a player who should start a bigger favourite?
