With a bye in the opening round, Fabio Fognini will begin his quest for a second title on these parts on Thursday when he takes on the tenacious Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.
Fognini won the 2018 edition of the Swedish Open (the first time he had played the tournament in eight years), beating the likes of Federico Delbonis, Fernando Verdasco, and Richard Gasquet.
Technically, the Italian hasn’t defended his title after he pulled out from the 2019 edition due to a persistent ankle injury. Fognini managed to undergo surgery to repair the damage in 2020 – the pandemic year which saw the Swedish Open along with many other tournaments canceled. He ended last season with a 6-10 win-loss record – the lowest such wins since he turned professional.
There have been sporadic improvements by Fognini this season in which he played a fine tournament at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round for the fourth time. But his failure to defend his Monte Carlo title from 2019 saw his stock fall sharply – from inside the top 20 to outside the top 30.
Fognini will play in his first match on clay since losing the third round of Roland Garros.

Carballes Baena Has Match Practice In Bastad
Roberto Carballes Baena has acclimatized to the surface and court conditions in Bastad after winning his first-round match against Facundo Bagnis 6-2 6-4 to progress.
Carballes Baena won 67% of his first serve and only 33% behind his second. But those numbers should not in any way be cause for concern. The 28-year-old rarely relies on his serve to dig him out of trouble, especially on clay. But he is a tireless worker who is known to put a shift from the back of the court.
He outlasted his Argentine opponent, saving three break points and converting five of his own.
The Spaniard is also in action in doubles where he partners Marco Cecchinato. And the pair of them advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon beating the duo of Nicolas Monroe and Andrei Valisevski.

Carballes Baena may not have a vast array of shots as his opponent, but he plays a steady game from the baseline. Fognini could have his hands full here especially if he takes time to get in a groove.
