Roberto Carballes Baena v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

This will be a first meeting of 97th-ranked Carballes Baena and 99th-ranked Gombos.

Carballes Baena Beat Fognini to Reach Quarters

For the second time this week, Roberto Carballes Baena started as the bookies’ underdog but came out victorious in a three0set win over third seed Fabio Fognini.

The Spaniard won 6-3 1-6 6-4 in a little over two hours to reach his third tour-level quarterfinal of the season. He converted four of six breakpoints, and crucially two of those in the final set. Fognini had not played on clay since Roland Garros and he was given a bye due to his high seeding.

The Italian took some time to find his range, and that was all Carballes Baena needed to make his move in a very tightly-contested opening set. But at 3-3, remarkably, the Spanish World No. 97 won 12 straight points to clinch the set.

Carballes Baena had secured a fine win over the in-form Facundo Bagnis in his first-round match. That victory certainly put him in good stead to combat Fognini’s shotmaking ability with his relentless counterpunching game.

Although Fognini hit back to take the second set, Carballes Baena was composed and took advantage of Fognini’s erratic groundstrokes.

Gombos Eliminated Ruusuvuori

Norbert Gombos extended his winning record over Emil Ruusuvuori to 3-0, after he posted a routine 6-2 6-4 win on Thursday to reach the last eight.

The Slovak put a serving masterclass against the eighth-seeded Finn who failed to break serve in two attempts. In fairness, Gombos did not gift any room for Ruusuvuori to express himself. He suffocated him with his inch-perfect serve that was hitting the right spots.

Gombos won 85% of first-serve points (33 out of 39), and broke serve twice in the first set and once in the second to get the job done.

This will be the World No. 99’s fourth tour-level quarterfinal of 2021, after reaching the last eight on the clay of Marbella, Munich, and Parma. But he has never scaled this hurdle before in his career. Can he achieve a significant landmark when he takes on Carballes Baena on Friday?

Carballes Baena v Gombos Prediction and Tip

Considering that Gombos was a game away from defeat in his first-round match against Pablo Cuevas, it has been a heroic effort to turn his fortunes around. If he maintains his consistent serving he could give Carballes Baena plenty to think about. But with that said, surface preference should give the Spaniard a tiny edge.
