Danielle Collins v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

There have been two previous WTA meetings between these two players and both Collins and Kalinina have won once apiece. Kalinina won on the hard courts of Houston Open while Collins defeated her opponent more recently at French Open in 2021.

They had also met on the ITF circuit once and Kalinina had won that encounter.

Collins Punishes Paula

It was Collins’ third straight win without dropping a set as she reached her second semifinal of the season and first in nearly five months.

Collins defeated Paula Ormaechea in straight sets, needing an hour and 29 minutes to register a 6-1, 6-4 win. The American who had earlier showed no mercy on Martina Di Giuseppe and Reka Jani in her first two wins, was off to a flier against Ormaechea as well as she broke her opponent twice in a row to 5-0 up.

A late hold by Ormaechea stopped the bagel but Collins easily served it out to pouch the opening set.

In the second, Collins and Ormaechea exchanged four successive breaks of serve to make it 3-3. And while Collins missed a break-point very next game, she broke Ormaechea in the eighth game before wrapping things up.

Kalinina Continues Winning Streak

It’s not just the three wins she has registered in this tournament to make it to the semifinal. Kalinina has now delivered the result at the WTA level as well after having won back to back ITF tournaments before the Budapest Open.

And that being the case, it was no surprise the manner in which she pumelled Panna Upvardy in her quarterfinal encounter. She came through 6-4, 6-4 to make it to the semifinal.

Kalinina was on court for an hour and 56 minutes, breaking her opponent four times but did lose her own serve twice in the encounter. Both of those breaks came in the first five game of the match as both players tussled not to cede control.

It was a break of serve at 4-4 that took Kalinina away from her opponent.

Collins v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Collins will be a favourite but we won’t discount someone like Kalinina, who was an unknown quatity till before this tournament. Expect a three-setter here.
