Feliciano Lopez v Marc-Andrea Huesler Head to Head

In their only previous meeting Huesler defeated Lopez in straight sets in Kitzbuhel in 2020 to make it to the semifinal.

Lopez Falls to Another Clay Loss

While Lopez did the best he could during the grass swing, his form continued to slump on clay as he resumed his time there with a first round defeat at Hamburg earlier this week.

The Spaniard lost to fellow countryman Carlos Taberner in three sets to record his fifth defeat on clay to go with two wins. That also gave him a three-match losing streak overall, which includes two losses on grass and three defeats in a row on clay as well.

Lopez, who last won an ATP title in 2019 and was the winner of this title in 2016 has unsurprisingly fallen to 90th in the world following a few seasons of struggle. This year itself has been one of his worst in terms of win-loss, with the Spaniard having won just eight of his 22 matches.

And starting out against Marc-Andrea Huesler in his opener here, he starts off a second favourite given all of the aforementioned issues.

Huesler in a Form Slump of His Own

While Lopez is in the twilight of his career and has, as a result struggled with carving wins of his own, Huesler’s issues are surprising considering he had had a decent 2020.

Having begun the last season ranked outside the top 300, Huesler made it through to a season-high of 146th on the charts. Unfortunately, since then, he hasn’t been able to find a way through, unable to win a lot.

In fact, Huesler’s 14 wins this season to 21 defeats, have come in qualifiers and Challenger competitions – none in the main draw of an ATP tournament.

Adding to his woes is the fact the Swiss player has found it difficult to make it through to the main draw as well, having done that just one before this in 2021.

Which is why it might not be the easiest for him to get through this opener despite coming up against a player who has had his own form issues.

Lopez v Huesler Prediction and Tip

While Huesler is a favourite here, 3/5 odds to win this, we reckon Lopez might not be a pushover. Expect him to put up a bigger fight than those odds suggest.
