Jason Jung v Evgeny Donskoy Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two players and both those came on the Challenger circuit. Donskoy won the first one while Jung clinched the second, both on hard court surfaces, to make it 1-1.

Jung Coming off Newport Quarterfinal

After having begun quite slowly this season, Jung finally managed to get going in the Wimbledon qualifiers where he made the third round but more importantly at Newport Open last week.

The Taipei player sent Brendon Schnur and Tennys Sandgren out before losing to Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals, making it his first set of successive wins since the 2020 New York Open.

He is now back playing on hard court surfaces, where he hasn’t played a lot of tennis this season. He did participate in the Little Rock Challenger tournament, where again Jung made it as far as the quarterfinals but that’s where his party ended.

Hard court is where Jung has played most of his career tennis, but won just seven of his 22 matches. Can he go past an opponent who himself has had a struggle on his hands this year?

Donskoy on a Four-Match Losing Streak

For starters, Donskoy hasn’t quite won a single main draw match at the highest ATP level this season. That’s not where his problems end though.

The Russian, who made the quarterfinal at Nottingham Challenger, has since then lost four matches in a row. This includes opening round defeats in the second Challenger at Nottingham and Newport Open and a qualifying loss at Wimbledon.

On outdoor hard courts, Donskoy’s only two appearances came in the qualifiers at Australian Open and ATP Dubai and he lost both of them there too.

That being said, Donskoy does have a better experience of playing in main draws of ATP events than Jung, having featured in 121 hard court matches. He has won 44 of them, giving him a better record than on grass and clay – an indicator he prefers this surface.

Jung v Donskoy Prediction and Tip

While neither player has too much form going for him, Donskoy’s experience at this level on hard court surfaces makes him a slight favourite for us. The bookmakers deem otherwise though.
