Feliciano Lopez v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

This will be the first time when the 39-year-old Spain will meet the 22-year-old Swede.

Lopez Gains from Huesler’s Pain

2016 Gstaad Open champion Feliciano Lopez has moved into the second round of the 2021 edition, but even the 39-year-old Spaniard would agree that his dramatic first round contest ended in a very unfortunate manner – not the way he would have wanted it to end.

Local hope Marc Andrea-Huesler had given Lopez a tough fight and with neither player ready to back down, the match seemed headed to an inevitable third set tiebreak.

But it all ended in agony for the 25-year-old Swiss, who hurt his toe while serving at 5-6 in the deciding set and thus retired with Lopez leading 6-4, 4-6, 6-5. Both players had seven break points in the match and both had converted three and saved four.

The win improved the World No. 89 to 23-11 in Gstaad. He was a finalist in 2006, a semifinalist in 2013 and 2015 and captured the crown by beating Robin Haase in 2016.

A seven-time champion on the tour, Lopez has been in ordinary form this year. He did get a few wins on grass, which has been a happy hunting surface for him over the years, but came to the Swiss Open with an ordinary 2-5 record on clay this season.

Ymer Rallies to Reach Second Round

After surviving a scare against World No. 162, Lopez will next face another up-and-coming youngster in Mikael Ymer. The 22-year-old Swede, who caught the eye with his impressive runs at the Australian and French Opens this year, held his nerves to defeat France’s Enzo Couacaud in the first round.

Having lost the first set, Ymer bounced back in the second and then got a vital double break in the third to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 53 minutes.

The gutsy Swede, who had already displayed his ability to deliver under pressure at the Australian Open when he defeated Hubert Hurkacz in five, has surprisingly done well at the bigger tournaments, reaching the third rounds at the Australian Open, in Roland Garros and in Miami.

However, he is yet to have the same sort of impact in the other tournaments. Ymer is 3-4 on clay this year and will be eyeing his first tour-level quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Lopez v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Lopez has great experience in Gstaad and will hope to bring all that into play on Wednesday, but he will be wary of the young Swede and his ability to hold nerves under pressure. Another three-setter seems to be in the offing.
