Kudla Survives Tough First Round Battle
Kudla came to Mexico after a successful grass court season in which he finished a runner-up in Nottingham, and reached the third round in Wimbledon for the first time in his career, , his best ever performance in a Grand Slam.
However, he almost failed to get beyond the first round in Los Cabos, after a tough battle with the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, the world number 183.
Kudla began the match badly, dropping his opening service game, and then was broken again allowing Kokkinakis to claim the first set.
The American had to save three break points on his own serve early in the second set, but, when no more were forthcoming for either player, it went to a tie-break.
And it was Kudla who managed to secure the decisive mini-breaks, although it took him three set points before he was able to level the match.
Again, Kudla had to save break points early in the third set, and then serving to stay in the match, he faced match point. He saved it though, and again it went to a tie-break. He was the first to drop his serve, but rallied to win the next two points and created a match-point of his own, The Australian saved it, but not the second that arrived soon afterwards.

Landmark Win for Escobedo
Currently ranked 182 in the world, Escobedo is appearing in the main draw of a senior ATP event for the second time this year, and like the first occasion in Miami, he has made the second round after coming through qualifying.
And he got there with one of the best wins of his career over fellow American, Mackenzie McDonald, currently ranked 106th in the world.
The first set was dominated by serve, and only one break point was created on either side of the net. Crucially for Escobedo it fell to him and he was able to take it and serve out next game.
McDonald began the third set terribly, dropping his opening three service games, the third after a titanic struggle of a game which featured ten deuces.
However, he then got two of them back, but serving for the match, Escobedo held his nerve and sealed the win.
Kudla v Escobedo Prediction and Tip
Kudla is the higher ranked of the pair and will start the favourite for this match, but he may have to play better than he did against Kokkinakis if he wants to beat Escobedo, a man who will be buoyed by his victory over McDonald.
