Barty Aiming for Gold

A two-time Grand Slam champion including one in the lead-up to this tournament, and a player in the kind of form she is in, Barty will have one aim and that is to win the singles gold at the very least.

What’s standing in her way is a tough draw which has Spain’s Sorribes Tormo as her first round opponent, a player who is known to have surprised a few. The good news for Barty is her confidence would be at its most elevated after having only just won the Wimbledon title.

At Wimbledon, Barty was virtually unstoppable despite having gone into that tournament with a shadow of a fitness concern. A first round struggle against Carla Suarez Navarro was followed by five straight-set wins to help her get to the final with ease.

In the final, Barty looked to be on her way to another easy win before a late fightback from Karolina Pliskova forced her into the decider. She won in three.

The last time the Olympics were held, Barty hadn’t even managed to win her second qualifying round at Wimbledon. Things have drastically changed for the better for her and she will hope to continue to build on her success.

Sorribes Tormo’s Run Stopped by Clay, Grass

It had been a solid start to her season, one that saw Sorribes Tormo break into the top 50 on the WTA charts this year.

It consisted of a title win at Guadalajara, her first ever on the WTA tour, semifinal at Monterrey Open and a couple of quarterfinal appearances in Abu Dhabi and Miami.

Riding on that high, a lot was expected out of Sorribes Tormo coming into the clay swing, but in the five tournaments she played, the Spaniard won just two matches. What was even more shocking was it is a surface she has typically enjoyed playing on and won a lot more than any other.

And while it became a better on grass – a semifinal at Bad Homburg – it remains to be seen if the Spaniard can recapture some of the form from her hard court times this season.

Unfortunately for her, the luck of draw hasn’t gone her way.

Barty v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

This might not be the most straightforward openers for Barty who is up against a player who has done well in hard court tournaments this season. Still expecting Barty to win in straight sets.
