Iga Swiatek v Mona Barthel Head to Head
Swiatek won their only previous meeting in Prague in 2018.

In-form Swiatek a Top Contender
Her father Tomasz Swiatek is a Polish rower and he competed in the 1988 Olympics. Thirty-three years on, walking in her father’s footsteps, Iga Swiatek prepares to represent her country at the Summer Games. What’s more, the 20-year-old is not here just to make the numbers but is seen as a strong medal prospect.
Seeded sixth in the tournament, the 2020 French Open champion has been in terrific form this season, and two WTA title successes are a proof of that.
She is a coming off a 4-2 season on grass – her least preferred surface – but back on hard courts, she will be looking to regain the form that saw her race to the title in Adelaide and the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year.
An outstanding clay court player, Swiatek also captured her maiden WTA 1000 title this year, winning the Italian Open by double bagelling Karolina Pliskova in the final. The stunning rout made her instant favourite to defend her French Open title, but she was halted by Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals.
The Pole has an easy first round fixture, but things would keep getting tough with each round as she could meet Paula Badosa in the second round, Elise Mertens in the Round of 16 and Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals.

Barthel Starts as a Rank Outsider
Ranked 210th in the world, Germany’s Mona Barthel hasn’t had the best of times this year. She comes in with a 2-9 main draw record on the tour and has lost the last six of her matches played across levels.
There won’t be much expectations from the 31-year-old, who peaked to a career-high ranking of 23 in 2013.
A four-time winner and three-time runner-up on the tour, the aggressive right-hander has lost her consistency over the last four years, the result of which has seen her drop out of the top 200.
Barthel’s only previous appearance at the Olympics ended with a first round defeat to Poland’s Urszula Radwanska in 2012. On Saturday, she will come up against another Pole who will look to keep her winless at the Olympics.
