Stefanos Tsitsipas v Philipp Kohlschreiber Head to Head

Tsitsipas and Kohlschreiber have played each other three times before this. The Greek leads the head-to-head 2-0, with their third meeting ending prematurely after Kohlschreiber retired midmatch at the 2020 Australian Open.

Tsitsipas Needs to Find Form, and Fast

Stefanos Tsitsipas will carry Greece’s hopes for a singles medalist in men’s tennis. But given his alarming form, it wouldn’t be a major surprise if he fails to live up to the billing.

Tsitsipas went as far as suggesting he lacked fighting spirit in the aftermath of his shock first-round defeat to Frances Tiafoe at Wimbledon. It was a listless performance in which his second serve scraped the 50% mark and failed to convert a single break of serve in seven attempts.

Even a return to the clay courts of Hamburg couldn’t lift his spirits. Tsitsipas was upset in the quarterfinals by Filip Krajinovic. Despite taking a commanding 5-0 lead and appearing to run out of sight, his level dropped considerably in the next two sets to cease control of the match.

But in the midst of this dwindling run of form, this season has turned into a career-best for Tsitsipas. The 22-year-old sits at a career-high ranking of No. 4, and played in his first Grand Slam final a month ago at the French Open – coming to within a set of stunning Novak Djokovic.

Tsitsipas will play at the Olympic games for the first time in his career.

Kohlschreiber Set For Second Olympics Appearance

Philipp Kohlschreiber was one of the few evergreen mainstays inside the top 100. But at 37, even the technically efficient are not prone to aging. Kohlschreiber exited the world’s top 100 for the first time since 2006 in February this year.

With a triple-digit ranking, Kohlschreiber has found limited opportunities to play at ATP tour events. He has relied on wild cards to play at home tournaments and was unable to scale past the qualifying rounds in Parma.

His major highlight of what has been a turbulent year remains a quarterfinal showing on the grass of Halle. But should he triumph on Sunday, it will definitely rank as one of the most satisfying results of his career.

The German one-hander is 9-9 for the season including matches at the ATP Challenger Tour. But remarkably, he has not played a single hard court tournament in 2021, which is a serious question mark of his conditioning and form on the surface.

Kohlschreiber will make his second straight Olympics participation, five years on from the disappointment of retiring in his scheduled second-round match in Rio in 2016.

Tsitsipas v Kohlschreiber Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas has won an impressive 40 matches this season. And despite his recent abysmal showings at Wimbledon, and most recently in Hamburg, we still fancy the Greek to lay down a marker on Sunday.
